Interactive Flat Panel FAQ: 25 Questions UAE Buyers Ask, Answered Directly
Share
An interactive flat panel is a large touchscreen display, typically 55 to 98 inches, that combines a 4K LCD screen, a multi-touch glass surface, a built-in Android computer and whiteboard software into a single wall-mounted unit for meeting rooms and classrooms. It replaces the projector, whiteboard and often the room PC, and lets people write, annotate and present with a finger or pen while connecting laptops, cameras and video calls. In the UAE, interactive flat panels are now the standard display in new office fit-outs in Dubai and Abu Dhabi and in most private school classrooms. Below are the 25 questions we are asked most, each answered directly.
Quick reference: interactive flat panel facts
- Typical sizes: 55, 65, 75, 86 and 98 inches; 65 and 75 inches are the most common in the UAE.
- Cost band: Broadly from the low thousands of dirhams for a 55 inch value panel to the high teens of thousands for a premium 86 or 98 inch model.
- Lifespan: Panels are rated for 30,000 to 50,000 hours, which is 10 or more years of office use.
- Warranty: Three years is standard; some brands offer five years for education.
- Internet: Not required for whiteboarding or a connected laptop; needed for apps, cloud saving and video calls.
What is an interactive flat panel?
An interactive flat panel, or IFP, is an all-in-one touchscreen display built for collaboration rather than television viewing. It has a toughened glass front with 20 to 40 touch points, an Android operating system with whiteboard and screen-sharing apps, and inputs for laptops and cameras. It is designed to run all day, every day, in a business or school.
How much does an interactive flat panel cost in the UAE?
A 55 inch entry-level interactive flat panel starts in the low thousands of dirhams, a 65 inch mid-range model sits in the mid thousands, a 75 inch in the high single-digit thousands, and 86 and 98 inch premium panels run into the low-to-high teens of thousands. Installation, a stand or bracket and an optional OPS PC add to that. Prices vary by brand, touch technology and warranty length.
What size do I need?
Choose the size from the distance to the farthest viewer: 55 inch up to about 4 metres, 65 inch to 5 metres, 75 inch to 6 or 7 metres, and 86 inch for larger boardrooms and classrooms. The 65 inch is the safe choice for most UAE meeting rooms and the 75 inch for classrooms. Our size guide has a full viewing-distance table.
Android or Windows?
Every interactive flat panel has Android built in, which handles whiteboarding, browsing, screen sharing and most apps. Windows is added by sliding an OPS PC into the panel's slot and is needed for full Microsoft Office, specialist software and domain-joined IT environments. Most schools stay on Android; most corporate boardrooms add Windows. See Android versus Windows OPS.
How long do they last?
Manufacturers rate the LCD backlight for 30,000 to 50,000 hours to half brightness. At eight hours a day, five days a week, that is 15 to 25 years, so in practice the panel is replaced for features long before it wears out. The touch glass has no moving parts and does not degrade with use.
Do they need internet?
No. The whiteboard, annotation tools and any connected laptop work with no network at all. You need internet for cloud saving, app updates, web browsing, wireless screen sharing across networks and video calls. Most offices connect the panel by Ethernet for reliability.

Can it replace a projector?
Yes, and it usually should. An interactive flat panel is brighter, sharper, has no lamp to replace, casts no shadows and works with the lights on and blinds open, which matters in sunlit UAE rooms. Projectors only keep an advantage for very large images above 120 inches. Our panel versus projector versus TV comparison goes through the numbers.
What warranty should I expect?
Three years on-site is the norm for business panels in the UAE, and several education brands offer five years for schools. Check whether the warranty is on-site or return-to-base, because an 86 inch panel is not something you carry to a service centre. An annual maintenance contract can extend cover beyond the standard term; see our warranty and AMC guide.
What is the difference between an interactive flat panel and a touchscreen TV?
A touchscreen TV is a consumer television with a touch layer added; it lacks pen support, a proper Android collaboration system, an OPS slot and a commercial warranty. An interactive flat panel is built for daily commercial use with anti-glare glass, precise pen input and multi-year on-site support. For meeting rooms and classrooms, the panel is the correct product.
Which touch technology should I choose?
Infrared touch is the most common and the best value; it works with a finger, any pen or a gloved hand. Capacitive and in-glass panels give a smoother, more accurate pen feel and no bezel lip, at a higher price. For most offices and schools infrared is fine; choose capacitive for design studios and executive boardrooms.
How many people can write at the same time?
Most panels support 20 touch points on Android and 40 on Windows, which means four or five people can write simultaneously in practice. Many panels also distinguish pen from finger from palm, so you can write with the pen and erase with your palm without changing tools.
Can I connect my laptop wirelessly?
Yes. Panels include wireless screen sharing that works with Windows, Mac, iOS and Android devices, and many support a plug-in USB button or dongle for guests. Wired USB-C remains the most reliable option for important presentations, since it carries video, touch and charging in one cable.
Does it work with Microsoft Teams and Zoom?
Yes, in one of two ways. Connect a laptop and the panel acts as a large touch display with the panel's camera and microphones available to the call, or run Teams or Zoom directly on the panel's Android system or on a Windows OPS PC. Dedicated Teams Rooms and Zoom Rooms kits are also available for boardrooms.
Do I need a separate camera and microphone?
Many panels have a built-in 4K camera and microphone array that is adequate for huddle rooms up to about five people. For medium and large rooms, a separate conference camera or video bar with speaker tracking gives far better results. Classrooms rarely need a camera unless they run hybrid lessons.
What is an OPS slot?
OPS stands for Open Pluggable Specification, a standard slot on the back of the panel that accepts a slide-in PC module. It lets you add a full Windows computer with no external cables, and swap or upgrade it later without touching the display. See our ports and OPS explainer.
Can I wall mount it or do I need a stand?
Either. A wall bracket is cleanest for a permanent meeting room or classroom, provided the wall is block or reinforced. A mobile stand lets the panel move between rooms and avoids drilling, which suits leased offices and shared spaces. Panels weigh 35 to 90 kg depending on size, so mounting should be done by a two-person team.
How much power does it use?
A 65 inch panel draws roughly 150 to 250 W in use and under 1 W in standby; an 86 inch panel around 350 to 450 W. That is similar to a large television and far less than a projector plus a PC. A standard 13A socket is sufficient.
Is it bright enough for a sunlit room?
Standard panels are 350 to 450 nits with anti-glare glass, which is comfortable in normal office lighting and readable in most rooms with blinds. For rooms with direct sun on the screen, choose a 500 nit or brighter model and position the panel on a wall that does not face the windows.
Which brands are available in the UAE?
The main brands sold and supported locally include Samsung, BenQ, ViewSonic, MAXHUB, Clevertouch and Yealink, alongside Elo for touch displays and Dell for monitors. All are available with local warranty and installation through SmartScreens' interactive flat panel range.
How do I clean the screen?
Switch the panel off, then wipe with a dry or lightly damp microfibre cloth. Never spray liquid directly on the glass and avoid alcohol or ammonia cleaners on non-glass bezels. Cleaning once a week is enough for most offices; classrooms may need it daily.
Does it come with whiteboard software?
Yes. Every panel includes a whiteboard app on its Android system for writing, drawing, inserting images and saving pages as PDF. Brands such as BenQ, ViewSonic and Clevertouch add their own collaboration suites with cloud sync and lesson tools. Paid third-party platforms are optional.
FAQ
How long does installation take?
A single wall-mounted panel takes two to three hours including bracket fitting, cabling and setup. A mobile stand installation is under an hour. Multi-room rollouts are usually scheduled at one room per half day.
Can it be used as a digital signage screen?
Yes. When not in a meeting, the panel can display a welcome screen, company news or a schedule using its Android system or a signage app. Dedicated signage displays remain cheaper if touch and whiteboarding are not needed.
Is 4K resolution necessary?
All current interactive flat panels are 4K, so the question no longer arises. 4K matters on large screens because text stays sharp when viewers are close to the display.
