Why touch technology matters

Two panels can share the same 4K screen, the same brightness and the same Android system, yet feel completely different to write on. The difference is the touch layer, the technology that detects where and how you touch the glass. It governs how accurately the pen tracks, how many people can write at once, whether you can rest your palm while writing, and how the surface feels under a fingertip. Get it right and the panel disappears and people just teach and present. Get it wrong and every session has a little friction.

Infrared (IR) touch

IR is the most common technology on commercial interactive panels. A slim frame around the screen projects an invisible grid of infrared beams just above the glass. When a finger, pen or any object breaks the grid, sensors calculate the position. Because it detects anything solid, IR works with a gloved hand, a regular pen or a dedicated stylus, and it supports high multi-touch counts, often 20 points or more, so a whole group can write together.

Modern IR panels achieve fast response and good accuracy, and they are cost-effective at large sizes, which is why they dominate education and general meeting rooms. Their trade-off is that the touch point sits a fraction above the glass, and very bright direct sunlight or dust in the frame can occasionally affect sensing. For the vast majority of indoor rooms, none of that is noticeable.

Capacitive (PCAP) touch

Projected capacitive is the same technology found in smartphones and tablets, scaled up. A transparent conductive layer is bonded to the glass and senses the tiny electrical change your finger creates on contact. Because sensing happens exactly at the glass surface, capacitive feels the most immediate and precise, with an ultra-smooth, edge-to-edge finish and no bezel frame catching the light. It handles fast gestures and fine detail beautifully.

The trade-offs are cost and pen behaviour. Large-format capacitive panels are more expensive to make, and they respond to conductive input, so a bare finger or an active/conductive stylus works, but an ordinary passive pen or a gloved hand may not. Where a smartphone-like premium feel is the priority, capacitive is hard to beat.

InGlass touch

InGlass is a premium optical technology in which the sensing components are embedded with the glass rather than in a raised outer frame. The result is a flush, bezel-light surface with excellent accuracy, very low parallax (the pen tip and ink line up closely), and a smooth writing feel that many people prefer for long-form annotation and drawing. It typically supports simultaneous pen, finger and palm input with reliable differentiation, so one user can write with a pen while another uses a finger.

InGlass sits between IR and capacitive on price and is often chosen for higher-end classrooms, design studios and executive boardrooms where writing quality and a refined finish justify the premium.

Accuracy is how closely the detected point matches where you actually touched; parallax is the small visible gap between the pen tip and the ink caused by the thickness of the glass.
